About those lists
In January, Porthole Cruise Magazine named Charleston one of the
World's Top 10 Most Romantic Ports of Call. It is the only U.S.
port on a list that includes Bora Bora, Barcelona and Rio de Janeiro.
Bessinger's Barbeque, a Charleston institution for 60 years, has
been named the No. 1 Barbeque Restaurant by National Barbeque
News.
And the April Issue (on newsstands today) of Southern Living magazine
contains a list of 40 Things Every Southerner Ought To Do. Try
fried frog legs?
Guess what's on the list? King Street is named "the best overall
shopping experience in the South." Middleton Place is named a
great place to visit. Oh, and rafting the upstate Chattooga River
is listed as a great Southern experience.
Other mentions that apply to the Lowcountry: sweetgrass baskets,
Southern manners, sweet tea ("the house wine of the South"), vegetables
and shagging (the dance) at Myrtle Beach.
Southern Living also names some of GMLC's personal Southern favorites:
Gruene Hall in the Texas Hill Country ... Savannah's St. Patrick's
Day Parade ... Monticello in Charlottesville, Va. ... Graceland
in Memphis, Tenn. ... Cafe du Monde in New Orleans ... the Outer
Banks of North Carolina ... and Sewanee, Tenn.
